Cut Loose in Melbourne! Footloose The Musical is a Timeless Ode to Freedom and Fun

Footloose The Musical is a Timeless Ode to Freedom and Fun
“Dancing is not a crime!”—that’s the rebellious heart of Footloose, and it’s a message that feels as vital today as it did when the film burst onto our screens in the ’80s. Last Thursday, on a brisk Melbourne winter weeknight, I had the pleasure of experiencing this energy live at the Athenaeum Theatre, and it was the perfect remedy for the mid-year grind. For any busy woman seeking a joyful, high-octane escape, this musical is a must-see.
The evening was part of a fabulous VIP Womxn’s Supper Series event, a truly special invitation from the team at Fuller PR. The fun began with a delicious Thai dinner at the iconic Cookie on Swanston Street, an iconic Melbourne institution that felt both familiar and fresh. It had been years since I’d been, and reconnecting with its eclectic, vibrant atmosphere was a pure delight. We then joined a group of dynamic women for a walk up Swanston to Collins Street, towards the beautiful Athenaeum, buzzing with excitement.

A Nostalgic Trip Back to the '80s
The moment the curtains rose, we were transported back to the rebellious spirit of the 1980s. For those of us who grew up with the film, the opening notes of the famous soundtrack are like a shot of pure nostalgia. But this isn’t just a simple rehash; this new stage production, which has audiences singing along to iconic anthems like Holding Out For A Hero, Let’s Hear It For The Boy, and of course, the title track Footloose, feels fresh and electrifying. The music, with its mix of pop, rock, and heartfelt ballads, perfectly captures the era’s blend of high-octane fun and deep emotion. The stage design and costumes—a fabulous touch of ’80s glitz—add to the immersive experience, making the Athenaeum Theatre the place to be this season.

More Than Just a Musical: Its Profound Meaning for Today

While the boppy tunes and incredible choreography are the stars of the show, the true magic of Footloose The Musical lies in its powerful, timeless message. It’s a story about a community grappling with grief and fear, a small town where music and dancing have been outlawed following a tragic accident. The arrival of Ren McCormack, the city kid with a passion for dance, is the catalyst that forces the town to confront its past and rediscover joy.
In a world where we often feel disconnected and overwhelmed, the show’s themes resonate deeply. It’s a bold and joyful reminder that creative expression is essential for our well-being and that community is built on empathy and understanding. The struggle for freedom of expression, the battle between tradition and change, and the importance of healing are all woven into the fabric of this production.

The Unexpected Star of the Show

While the lead performers Jarrod Moore as Ren and Jordan Twigg as Ariel were absolutely captivating, there was one character who, for me, was a genuine breakout star: Willard Hewitt. Played by the incredibly charming Maverick Newman (from Friends The Musical), Willard starts the show as the awkward, unassuming best friend. He’s initially a supporting act, but his journey from bumbling sidekick to confident dancer is a highlight of the production. His shining moment, the “Let’s Hear It For The Boy” dance number, was pure comedic gold and demonstrated a phenomenal transformation. I would absolutely argue he’s a lead in his own right, and his performance is a must-see. I found myself wondering about Maverick in real life and whether he is as endearing as Willard!
My guest for the night, the brilliant Dr. Mei Cheah, was equally impressed by the show’s uplifting power. As she eloquently put it:

"It was an absolute delight. The songs that we’ve known for the longest time, that have lived somewhat 'dormant' within us over the last decades, were invigorated with the colourful ensemble, and boppy tunes. The perfect pick-me-up to help destress!"

Melbourne is Cutting Loose!

Due to overwhelming demand, Footloose: The Musical has extended its initial season, with new performances across July and August. It’s a testament to how much Australians have embraced this brand-new, explosive production. Whether you’re a long-time fan of the original film or a newcomer looking for one of the most fun nights out you’ll have all year, this show is an absolute must.
The cast is stacked with phenomenal talent, including Stephen Mahy as Reverend Shaw Moore and Sophie Weiss as his wife, Vi Moore. From the supportive mother Ethel (Emma Russell) to the loyal friends Rusty (Maddison Coleman), Wendy Jo (Andrea Zappacosta), and Urleen (Angela Brischetto), every performer brings their all to the stage.
Don’t miss your chance to see this theatrical phenomenon. Tickets are selling fast and start at just $69.90. Snap up your seats to see this feel-good musical at the Athenaeum Theatre now and get ready to be inspired to dance!
