Westeros Through New Eyes: Thrones! The Musical Parody Rewrites The GoT Ending

Cast of 'Thrones! The Musical Parody' performing on stage, dressed in elaborate, humorous Westeros-inspired costumes.

Melbourne, get ready to bend the knee to hilarity! Thrones! The Musical Parody has finally arrived at St Kilda’s Alex Theatre, promising a bloody, sexy snow storm of laughs. For me who has only ever seen a few episodes of Game of Thrones (GoT) – and for Roslyn Foo, who’s seen absolutely none at all (yes, it’s true!) – this show was an unexpectedly wild ride. Arriving at the Alex Theatre, I expected to be completely lost, having never truly understood the GoT hype. Instead, I spent the night laughing far more than I anticipated. This show is designed to be a riot for everyone, whether you’re a devoted fan or largely unfamiliar with Westeros!

This global smash hit has already conquered stages in London, LA, and Vegas, following sensational seasons at the Sydney Opera House and Edinburgh Fringe. The buzz is real, with critics raving:

Thrones! The Musical Parody: All Eight Seasons in 90 Minutes? Challenge Accepted!

The genius minds behind this theatrical phenomenon are none other than the globally acclaimed comedy ensemble, Baby Wants Candy. You might recognise their alumni from Saturday Night Live’s Aidy Bryant or Silicon Valley’s Thomas Middleditch, a testament to the calibre of talent you’re about to witness. These comedic maestros have tackled the seemingly impossible: cramming all eight seasons of the blockbuster TV show into a fun-filled 90 minutes. And for those who felt a certain way about the original series’ conclusion, prepare for a delightful surprise. The show features a brand-new, glorious ending, complete with a catchy tune fittingly titled ‘Ending That You Want’.

The show dives headfirst into all the deliciously dramatic antics associated with Westeros (or, in our case, vaguely heard whispers about). The premise, following six friends attempting to explain all seven seasons to someone who has never watched them, immediately transported me back to a time when everyone was fascinated with the show, and some of us were just there for the snacks! The set, with its couch, bar stools, and doorframe, certainly had a Friends TV Show set vibe, but what happened on stage was sheer anarchy. Picture ridiculously handsome men duking it out with White Walkers, ridiculously beautiful women soaring on fire-breathing dragons (sometimes cleverly represented by a black and red umbrella that opens and shuts to mimic a breathing dragon’s head!), and just about everyone caught in a hilariously tangled web of trying to kill or shag each other. Nudity? Perhaps a cheeky hint. Laughs? Absolutely guaranteed. The incredibly talented cast sings and dances their way through a warped vision of Westeros, delivering unique spins on famous plots and twists, all set to a side-splitting original score that highlights memorable moments from every season.

Melbourne's Deep Roots in Westeros (and Now, the Parody!)

Melbourne has a well-documented obsession with Game of Thrones. Remember ThronesCon in 2017? Or perhaps the city’s notoriously high rates of pirated series downloads (let’s just say, dedication!). It’s clear our city has an insatiable appetite for all things GoT, making this Victorian premiere season the perfect storm of theatrical fun. What’s more, the show coincides perfectly with ComicCon 2025 in Melbourne, adding another layer of excitement for fantasy fans.

Cast member Conor Putland can’t wait to see how his adopted home town responds to this new production. “I’m such a huge fan of the series,” Conor shares. “The audience responses are so fun. GoT diehards will be able to relive all their favourite moments in hilarious new ways, with Jon Snow battling White Walkers, a red wedding re-enactment (to a song called ‘Stabbin’’!), all the forbidden desires of Cersei and Jamie and so much more. Even if you’ve never seen the series, it’s still a night of non-stop entertainment.” His enthusiasm is certainly convincing!

The hilarious cast includes Kelsey Halge (known from Cruel Intentions), Belinda Jenkin (Friends! The Musical Parody), Conor Putland (Grease The Musical), Crystal Hegedis (Legally Blonde), Joseph Lizacic (Kinky Boots), Asher Griffith-Jones (Stranger Juliet), Callum O’Malley (Bright Star), and Zoe Rose (Cruel Intentions). Their collective talent promises to bring the house down.

‘Thrones! The Musical Parody’ Takes Melbourne by Storm

The Clever Twist: A GoT Crash Course

What makes this musical truly shine is its clever framing device. Rather than a straightforward send-up, the show follows a “Friends-esque” group of adults. They gather to watch the final episode of Game of Thrones with their recently-divorced companion, hoping to cheer her up. But, shock horror, she’s never actually watched the show! So, they embark on the ambitious task of re-enacting all eight seasons to bring her up to speed.

What unfolds is a deliriously funny, energetic, and wonderfully anachronistic summary of the complex, sweeping narrative that fans adore (and newcomers are about to discover!). This musical celebrates as much as it lampoons, masterfully touching upon the many highlights of the series. For someone who missed out on the Game of Thrones era, this felt like the ideal crash course—fast, uncensored, and far more enjoyable than I had anticipated.

With a book, music, and lyrics by Chicago’s improv masters Albert Samuels, Chris Grace, Dan Wessels, Zach Reino, Nick Semar, and Erica Elam of Baby Wants Candy, you know you’re in expert comedic hands.

Editor’s Note: “Walking into Thrones! The Musical Parody having never watched a single episode of Game of Thrones felt like a secret confession. The immediate relief was palpable when the parody opened with its main character, Linda, in the exact same boat! It was like finding a long-lost bestie – a hilariously relatable experience that made the entire show even more delightful for this GoT novice.” Roslyn Foo
