The Sound of Music

The Sound of Music

Relive the enchantment of The Sound of Music at the historic National Theatre in St Kilda in this heartfelt review. As a dedicated fan of musical theatre, attending the opening night of this beloved classic was a dream come true. From the moment we stepped into the stunning heritage-listed National Theatre, we were transported back to our childhood, where the songs of Maria and the Von Trapp children filled our hearts with joy and nostalgia.

The story of The Sound of Music is based on the true story of the Von Trapp family. After the tragic loss of his wife, Captain Georg von Trapp hires Maria, a young governess, to care for his seven children. Through music, Maria brings joy and harmony back into the Von Trapp household, teaching the children to sing and bringing the family closer together. As tensions rise with the looming threat of Nazi occupation, the Von Trapp family must make a daring escape to freedom, culminating in a thrilling and emotional finale.

Directed by Karen Shnider, the production featured a 16-piece orchestra led by musical director Kent Ross and a talented cast of 43, including 12 young actors who shared the roles of the Von Trapp children. The performances were exceptional, with Tayla Dwyer (nee Thomas) delivering a captivating portrayal of Maria. Tayla’s rendition of iconic songs such as “Climb Ev’ry Mountain” and “My Favourite Things” was truly mesmerising, capturing the essence of the character with grace and charm.

A Night of Live Theatre to Remember

One of the highlights of the evening was the opportunity to meet the cast after the show. Singing along with them was a surreal experience, making the evening even more memorable. It was evident that the cast’s passion for the production was infectious, leaving the audience uplifted and inspired.

The Historical National Theatre in St Kilda

The National Theatre provided the perfect backdrop for this timeless classic. Originally built in 1920 as a 3000-seat cinema, the theatre’s charm and elegance added to the magic of the evening. Theatrical founder Andrew Gyopar’s commitment to revitalising the venue as a hub for musical theatre outside the CBD is commendable, offering audiences the opportunity to enjoy world-class productions at an affordable price point.
